State Fair Week and the Sacred Blue Envelope

Evan anecdotes this week. Okay, I admit it, I am a product of my upbringing. My Dad was on me growing up to reply with "yes" as opposed to "yeah" or "yep" While this annoyed me to no end as a teen, I find myself irritated when I hear it quite a bit in day to day life. James prefers to say "Yeah." So occasionally I have asked him to say "yes" when it is Evan talking to him because Evan started picking up on "yeah" and "yep" I just want my kids to be pleasant to be around, okay???? Anyway yesterday evening Evan said, "Daddy?" and James said, "Yeah?" and Evan said, "How about YES." He is my son.

We also had a near binkie reclaiming disaster. Last night James put Evan and Drew to bed while I went to Mom's Night Out. While he was putting Evan to bed, out of the blue Evan says that his binkies are in the dresser. We kept them in the top drawer of his tall dresser. He hasn't mentioned that they lived there for ages. Since he gave it up, 2 mos ago or so now. James said that there weren't any binkies up there but Evan kept insisting they were there. So James picks Evan up to show him without looking first to see if there were binkies in there. And there were! I had just forgotten to throw them out after I knew that Evan was over the binkie. So of course James has to give Evan a binkie. So Evan falls asleep with it, etc.

I come home and he tells me all this so I start brain storming about how we can possibly get rid of the binkies again. Worse because he now knows there are more than one.

James suggests that all of them should become broken. I said, no way, there is no way that will fool him, we need to come up with better than that.

So I thought of a friend's binkie fairy tactic. I went to Evan's Christmas stash and pulled out a Thomas the Train and immediately went to his room. I took the binkie out of his mouth while he slept and all the binkies out of his drawer and left the train.

He woke later with a terrible cough from his cold and started fussing. I went in and gave him some cough medicine and he asked me where the binkie was. I said that binkie fairy came and took all his binkies and left him a TRAIN!!!!! He asked again where it was and I pulled "binkeyland" out of the blue. That seemed to satisfy him and he asked me to open the train while he excitedly exclaimed that "trains go CHOO CHOO!" while pulling his hand down in that trucker motion. Then he rolled it around his pillow and went back to sleep after I left.

The next morning the first thing he said to me when I came in was "binkey train!" Hopefully it will be okay tonight, but I am sure we will have to remind him of the binkey fairy and his new train quite a bit in the coming weeks and show him the drawer several times and its new lack of binkies.

There was a lot going on this week. We went to the NC State Fair during James' lunch "hour" in the middle of the week then Grandma E came this weekend for a visit.

Evan and the foot long hot dog. I think he would have enjoyed it more if he could have sat down and eaten it. But there wasn't anywhere for us to squeeze our double stroller so we stood. Drew actually reached over at one point and grabbed a HUGE chunk of ketchup covered bun and started chowing down on it.

James and Evan rode quite a few rides and I rode the tea cups with Evan. Evan really loved riding all of them! We still have to accompany him on a lot of them due to some height restrictions, but I think he likes us to come along. He definitely needed me on the tea cups, because once those started up he was flung around the tea cup! So I grabbed him and held him on my lap.

Look at Evan's face on the swings. He actually liked riding them a lot, though his face doesn't betray that.

"I wish I was big enough to ride those fun rides." Soon enough.

So, a long long time ago, the Ballard family gave us this Little Tykes Mail Cart and Evan used it as a baby and then we eventually put it up in the attic. I brought it down a few weeks ago since Drew likes to pull up so much, I thought he could start using it. Evan very quickly claimed it as his own toy and likes to push it around and deliver "mail" to us. The mail consists of 3 plastic red, blue and yellow envelopes. Evan calls them "letters" Drew likes to play with the mail cart mostly because he sees Evan playing with it and he wants to know what the deal is. Evan is very protective of the mail cart and will yell at Drew if he touches it and snatch the "letters" out of Drew's hands if he sees Drew dare touch them. The mail cart is frequently in its own time out because of Evan's possessiveness. The other day, Evan was still napping and Drew got a hold of the blue letter and was pretty happy that he had free reign over this coveted artifact.

Our frogs had babies.

Drew is a little dare devil and will throw himself backwards when James is holding him. He flails out his arms and dives backwards wanting to be spun.

We enjoyed a nice visit with Grandma this weekend and went to the park. It was a low key and relaxing weekend.

Drew: I want that train. Evan: He better not be thinking about touching my train.

The Pumpkin Patch and More

Some Evanisms this week: Evan found one of Drew's tiny pastina stars on the floor the other day after Drew had eaten dinner. Evan called me over exclaiming, "Look Mommy look! Little star, little star!" (As in Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.)

Evan's latest joke is to pull his hand up into his sleeve and ask "Where hand go?" then laugh hysterically.

We were stuck in traffic the other day and Evan said "We go slow." So I tried to reenforce some proper grammar and I said "Yes, we are stuck in traffic and we are going slowly. As the traffic subsided and we started to accelerate Evan said "We go fastly."

The highlight of our week this week was a trip to Garnyard Farm's Pumpkin Patch with our play group. It was a lot of fun and warm today, unlike last year.

First up this week we enjoyed the weather by getting out of the house a bit for walks.

Both eating their favorite dinners. Drew had a home made chicken and veggie concoction and Evan had toast with jelly, hot dog, and applesauce.

Playing. They are doing more and more of this. Evan is also beginning to show responsibility towards Drew. He will remind me to get Drew out of the van and also put him in the van when we are going places. (As if we have forgotten him before!) Actually once I left Drew with James in the morning while I took Evan to preschool and Evan was upset that Drew wasn't with us.

Park fun. I will hold Drew's hand and back and slide him down the slide. He loves it and turns around to try to climb up for more.

On the hay ride. He was a little apprehensive to get on at first, but once he was on he had a great time "riding on tractor."

Evan ran up and picked his pumpkin right away. This was the one!

A couple unsuccessful attempts to get a good picture of Drew sitting beside a pumpkin. We gave up. In the second photo he is making a face at God knows what he put in his mouth.

The drought has taken a toll on the plant life here, crops, lawns, everything. This is the corn "maze" but it was a pretty sad sight this year.

Our Week: A Wedding and More.

My friend Katherine was married yesterday. She and Steve have been dating for a few years and they are a wonderful pair. She was married in Augsburg Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem, NC and the reception was held at Bermuda Run Country Club in Advance, NC. The reception was very nice and in such a beautiful spot with heavy hors d'oeuvres and some spirits. Evan stayed behind with (very kind)Lori and her son Vince and Drew came along with us. Evan had a lot of fun with Lori and Vince and talked about riding in Vince's car among other things today.

The church.

Their first dance. This is when we left because Drew was reaching his limit and he had been such a charming trooper so far. We had to leave before they cut the cake as well, which was disappointing.
